The 1939-1945 Star was awarded for 6 months operational services between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945, also for campaigns into Greece, Crete, Syria, Java, Sumatra, Malaya, Timor, Burma, Assam, and NW Frontier. Service ended by wounding or death also qualified.

The colours of the ribbon represent the three forces, Navy, Army, Air Force.
Approximately 203,000 were awarded to Australians.
