Instituted in 1918 like the other three (DFC, AFC, AFM) flying awards, the Distinguished Flying Medal has 45 degree stripes on the ribbon. The Distinguished Flying Medal was awarded to Non Commissioned Officers and other ranks for the same criteria as for the Distinguished Flying Cross. The medal was extended during the second World War to cover the Air Arms of the Army and Navy.
