The Australian Service Medal 1975+ was instituted on 13th September 1988 by the Australian Government in recognition of service by Australian Defence Forces and other personnel in campaigns of a minor scale (warlike operations). First issue was with ‘Kuwait’ clasp in 1991 Gulf War. The AASM has since been issued with the ‘Somalia’ clasp for service in that region in 1993.
The Australian Active Service Medal 75+ is a nickel-silver medal. The obverse has a Federation Star within a wreath of mimosa. On the reverse a laurel wreath surrounds the inscription ‘FOR ACTIVE SERVICE’. The Australian Active Service Medal ribbon colours are primarily variations of the Australian colours of green and gold with a central red stripe symbolising the dangers faced in warlike situations.
A clasp with the name of the theater or action for which the award is made is presented with the medal.
A further award of the Australian Active Service Medal in another area is recognised by the issue of an additional clasp. Additional clasps are worn above previously awarded clasps, in order of date of reciept.
Please note bars are available as a separate purchase.
