The Defence Medal was awarded for 6 months service in non-operational areas subjected to air attack, or closely threatened, or 12 months non-operational service. Service brought to an end by either death or wounding inflicted by enemy action also qualify.
The colours of the ribbon represent green for the British Isles, orange for the bombing fires and black for the black-outs.
Approximately 82,000 were issued to Australians.
