Instituted on 13th September 1988 by the Australian Government and made retrospective to the Kashmir and Middle East operations from 14th February 1975. The ASM was awarded in recognition of service by the Australian Defence Forces and other personnel in Peace keeping non-warlike operations. Fifteen clasps, denoting area of service, have been made applicable to the ASM.
