First instituted in 1918 for recognition of courage and devotion to duty while on active service by officers of the Air Force. This was extended to the Air Arms of both the Army and Navy from WWII.

The Distinguished Flying Cross is struck in silver, and in keeping with the Air Force awards has stripes at 45 degrees on the ribbon.
