Instituted in 1914 in recognition of distinguished service in the course of duty, but of a lesser ranking than that required for the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal. The Distinguished Service Medal was originally awarded to only Navy personnel below and including the rank of Petty Officer, however was extended to include Army and Air Force personnel serving on ships as well as Merchant Navy personnel.
