First issued in 1902 to Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and ranks above, of the Australian Armed Forces for meritorious and valuable service. From the 3rd January 1917 the Meritorious Service Medal was awarded to NCO’s and men of all the services with at least 22 years meritorious service.

Approximately 3,000 were issued to Australians by 1975.
